Non-GMO stands for non-genetically modified organisms. GMOs (genetically modified organisms), are not natural but organisms created in a laboratory using genetic modification/engineering techniques. For example, in agriculture, most farmers use GMO as seeds to grow fruits and vegetables in the ground like any other seed, only they have certain qualities and desirable traits. These seeds grow into plants that might better handle water-limited conditions or better withstand challenges like harmful insects, weeds, or disease. So in order to have a successful crop, farmers have to use GMO seeds to combat predators that will eat at their crop.
At Johnny Greens Farm, we are not using any GMOs since all our plants are growing inside (greenhouse) hydroponically (in water), there are no need for GMO seeds. We use 100% organic seeds from Saskatchewan well know farms.
Soap detergent, Scientists and consumer and environmental groups have cited many health and environmental risks with foods containing GMOs.
As a result of the risks, many people in the United States and around the world are demanding “non-GMO” foods.
